United’s first home game of the season, after two successive away victories, is against Hull this Saturday. This game is already been spoken about as though it’s going to be a promotion decider and a biggish crowd is expected at the KasStad.
Julian Alsop is likely to be fit again after being rested for the Millwall game, and Andy Scott could also be in contention for his first appearance of the season, although with two goals in two games it is unlikely that Steve Basham will be dropped.
Last season it was United’s home form that ultimately let them down, and it will be interesting to see how Ian Atkins converts their good away form into home victories. It is quite possible that, with the pacey Jon Ashton in the side, United might keep the midfield four who played so well at the New Den and drop Matt Bound from the defence, reverting to 4-4-2. Leicester have already indicated that they will allow Ashton to leave the Walkers Stadium on a free transfer, and Atkins has said that he would like United to keep him, so it’s up to Firoz Kassam whether he will allow more money to be spent on another wage.
United have received some more good news with the experts at Lilleshall telling Jamie Brooks that he can now resume full training, meaning that his possible return to the first team is only a matter of weeks away. Brookes and Lee Steele were both at the FA’s rehabilitation centre recently, causing them to miss out on the squad photo.
Hull City are again favourites for promotion, and they come to Oxford as league leaders, albeit after only one game. They have again spent lots of money during the close-season and this time the expectations of Tigers fans are so high that if the side fails to deliver it could mean the end of Peter Taylor’s management era. Rage Online reckons it will all end up in another disappointing 0-0, just like last season.
