United’s sixth signing of the Summer looks likely to be former Oxford midfielder Paul Wanless, who has agreed terms and will join the Us subject to a medical. Wanless is now 29, having spent seven years at Cambridge where he has just signed a one year extension to his contract. He is available on a free transfer due to a clause in that contract, and Ian Atkins has said that Wanless’s signing doesn’t mean that he is no longer persuing Tommy Widdrington, who could also sign, and who is set to feature against Coventry tomorrow.
Meanwhile, a scout from Oxford will be at Colchester tonight to watch 21 year old Irish striker Shea Campbell, according to his agent anyway. Campbell, who is on trial with the other Us, plays for Ballymena United, for whom he scored 37 goals in 42 games last season.
