Superwomen

Oxford United Ladies are proud to announce they have successfully gained a license to join the new Women’s Super League. The WSL is the top-tier of women’s football, with the league structure being expanded to divisions WSL1 and WSL2 in 2014. With only 18 clubs being selected as members of the newly founded leagues, Oxford United Ladies team are honoured to be part of the development.

The Ladies won the County Cup last Sunday and are still battling for the title in their league campaign. But it’s their hugely impressive FA Cup run this season that caught the headlines, eventually losing out to giants Everton infront of almost 1,000 supporters at the Kassam Stadium. Oxford United Ladies will compete with the likes of Aston Villa, Doncaster Rovers, Reading, Sunderland and Watford next year; and certainly hope to embark upon success in their debut season.

Simon Lenagan, Head of the Oxford United Youth and Community Trust said: “This is fantastic news. To move from the fourth tier to the second tier of women’s football in such a short space of time is a magnificent effort from everyone involved. The club has made huge strides in the three or four years since the ladies side started to play competitively and that is down to an enormous amount of hard work from manager Richard Blackmore, the staff and of course the players.

“These are very exciting times for women’s football and for Oxford United to be part of that is a great achievement. This and the success of the youth team this season embodies what Oxford United as a whole is striving for: bottom-up sustainable development, with investment in the right areas leading to success”.
