Tuesday night saw Oxford United continue their 100% record against AFC Wimbledon, played four, won four, and with a pleasing symmetry, the scores have been 1-0 and 2-0 both home and away. Dean Morgan scored his first goal for the club, and despite pressure from AFC when behind, including a last minute free kick just outside the area, United held on for the 1-0 win. When the free kick was awarded, manager Chris Wilder gave the drinks containers a hefty boot in frustration (whether this was for conceding the kick, or for the decision couldn't be discerned), sending lucozade and water bottles flying, and was sent from the dugout. It is not yet known whether he faces further punishment.
Saturday sees United back on the road with the short journey to Cheltenham and the Abbey Business Stadium (Whaddon Road). Earlier in the season there was talk of a move next to the racecourse, sharing a double sided grandstand, however this was shelved due to 'general economic uncertainty'.
Cheltenham haven't won for four straight games now, whereas United have been in 7th place in the league for over two months since dropping from 6th after the draw against Hereford United back on 21 January, (ten games ago). Victory would take United back up to 6th, due to superior goal difference compared with Cheltenham who currently occupy that spot on 61 points, three ahead.
In another of those wonderful pieces of statistics the football league like to use, Oxford have used 33 players so far this season, (14th in the league), compared to Cheltenham who have used the least, with just 23 before Saturday's game. Coincidentally, United also used 33 last season, and with no last day emergency loans, barring any youth team call ups or emergency goalkeepers it seems that it is it for the season.
United News
On Tuesday, Damian Batt and James Constable were back from suspension, but were kept waiting on the bench until 71 minutes, presumably to keep faith with the side that had won the previous game. United started the game with Oli Johnson, Dean Morgan and Scott Rendell up front, finishing with Johnson and Constable, Batt and Andy Whing making frequent forays up into the opponents half of the pitch. Tom Craddock and JPP are both making apparently making good progress in their return from injury.
In defence, presumably it will be back to the tried and tested Liam Davis, Michael Duberry, Jake Wright, Damian Batt, leaving the choice of playing either Andy Whing or Adam Chapman in front, and keeping a front midfield of Peter Leven and Asa Hall. Simon Heslop is on his way back too, but will face a tough challenge to break into the side.
Robins News
Cheltenham have been playing 4-5-1 for most of the season, but haven't scored for more than 5 1/2 hours. Recent matches have seen defeats to Shrewsbry (2-0), Gillingham (3-0), Swindon (1-0), and Morecambe (3-1). The home fixture against United ended in a 3-1 win for the Robins, and the side looked one of the better teams we have seen all season. Manager Mark Yates is expected to switch to 4-4-2 tommorrw, as on the last day of the emergency loan window, he brought in 6'3″ forward Ben Burgess from Notts County, and ex United player Steve MacLean.
Top scorer is Darryl Duffy with 11 league goals Kaid Mohamed has 9, and James Spencer 7. Marlon Pack has most shots with 73, most appearances with 44, and most fouls with 68 (league and cup).
