Dog day afternoons

From the Rage Online newsdesk Friday, May 28th, 2010

It's that boring time of year when nothing much of note is happening, and so Rage Online is going to take advantage of the fact by going on holiday for a week or so. Doubtless that will be the cue for a whole plethora of activities at United, who will probably go on to make a number of high-profile signings and indulge in some deeply significant activity behind the scenes. As usual, Rage Online will miss them all.

Things that have happened recently that you probably already know about include Sam Deering winning his second international cap one week after winning his first. Deering played for England C in their International Challenge game against Ireland under-23s in Waterford on Wednesday evening. England won 2-1 and although LSD wasn't one of the scorers he did play for 90 minutes before being substituted.

In transfer and contractual news, Mansfield Town today announced that they have signed Kevin Sandwith. The former United left-back will not meet up with his ex-colleague Luke Foster, who has been released by the Stags. Former Oxford players Jamie Slabber and Jamie Hand have both been released by Woking, while Julian Alsop's services are no longer required by Cheltenham Town. There is probably a lot of other former-player news, but we've either missed it or forgotten about it.

The first few pre-season friendlies and activities have been announced, commencing with the annual open day which will take place on Saturday 3 July. On Friday 9 July the club are hosting the Youth Development fundraising game, when a United XI will take on a celebrity side, much as they did last season. The first pre-season game so far announced is on Tuesday 13 July, when the Us will travel to Didcot Town's Loop Meadow, and one week later they will be back up in Scotland to take on Livingston. On Monday 26 July, Oxford will visit Brackley Town, followed four days later by the annual pre-season match at Oxford City. The last game announced so far before the season starts on 7 August is a trip to Banbury United on Monday 2 August.
