Alfie Potter's 86th-minute header secured Oxford a deserved win against a cynical Salisbury side in a game disrupted by the visitors' petty gamesmanship and some appalling officiating. The win virtually guaranteed United's place in the play-offs and continued the Us' 100% home record against the Whites.
Once again, Chris Wilder sprung a surprise with his starting line-up. Kevin Sandwith started at left-back, with Anthony Tonkin pushing up into midfield in place of the injured Simon Clist. Dannie Bulman started in midfield in place of Lewis Chalmers, while Franny Green replaced his suspended namesake Matt. United made their first substitution ten minutes after the break, when Sam Deering came on for Sandwith and Tonkin dropped back into defence. With around quarter of an hour remaining Potter replaced Franny Green in the match-winning move.
The first half was a fairly sterile affair, with Salisbury setting out their marker from the start as James Bittner ambled around at goalkicks and their players lay down and writhed at the slightest touch. Oxford weren't helped by some strange refereeing decisions, that saw Jack Midson frequently penalised for backing in. Midson scuffed a shot well wide, and a James Constable shot on the turn was well blocked, the referee awarding a goalkick of course. The closest either side came to a goal was when Constable flicked on a long-throw from Sandwith, but Tonkin headed straight at Bittner.
