Oxford City 1 Oxford United 2
History was made at Court Place Farm tonight, as for the first time City and United met at that venue in a competitive fixture. This evening's Oxfordshire Senior Cup semi-final was the first time the sides had met in the competition since United beat City 3-1 in the 2004-05 final, which in itself was the first time the sides had met in the competition since 1948, when Headington United won the final 1-0 in a match played at Oxford University Rugby Ground in Iffley Road in front of 7,796 spectators.
The first half was a goalless affair, although Jack Midson had the ball in the net in the first five minutes, but had his effort ruled out for offside. After quarter of an hour Lee Steele glanced a header just wide of Billy Turley's post before Turley had to dive full-length to save from Jonathan Douglas.
United were livelier in the second half, mounting the pressure on the City goal without unduly troubling goalkeeper Jon North. United took the lead just after the hour following some excellent work on the right wing by Jack Midson. His low cross found Ashley Cain, who flashed a shot past North into the far corner of the goal. With quarter of an hour to go United doubled their lead after North had flapped at a cross. The ball was crossed back across the area to an unmarked Jamie Cook, who expertly volleyed the ball past the City 'keeper. The linesman raised his flag for offside, but was overruled by referee John Busby, who ruled that a City player touched the ball before it reached Cook. City pulled a goal back with five minutes remaining when David Perpetuini shot home from the edge of the penalty area, but Turley was untroubled in the final few minutes.
United, the holders of the Cup, will play either Banbury United, who they beat in last year's final, or North Leigh, who they beat in last year's semi-final, in the final at the Kassam Stadium. Their semi-final will be played on Tuesday 16 March at Court Place Farm. [@opponent]oxford city[/@opponent]
