Going to the dogs

Oxford United visit Kenilworth Road this evening looking to complete the double over Luton Town. The game is likely to be the second-best attended Conference match of the season so far, with almost 10,000 expected to be there after Oxford sold out their allocation of 1,500 tickets. The best crowd was at the reverse fixture on 8 September, when 10,613 watched United ease to a 2-0 win. This figure was then bandied around in support of England's World Cup bid for 2018, although it's unlikely that either Oxford or Luton will host any games should the bid be successful (which is also unlikely).

Chris Wilder has to make one forced change to the side that could only draw 0-0 with Kidderminster Harriers on Saturday; James Constable received his tenth booking of the season and will therefore be suspended for both tonight's game and the home match against Histon this Saturday. With Adam Murray still missing with a bad back, which may possibly see him out for the rest of the season, it means Oxford will have to do without two of their key players, but the squad should have the strength in depth to cope. Jack Midson will almost certainly start in place of Constable, while in midfield there are players of the calibre of Chris Hargreaves and Adam Chapman waiting in the wings. Depending on how Wilder sees Luton's approach to the game, he may also recall Mark Creighton to the defence, either alongside Jake Wright and Rhys Day, or as a swap for one of them. With plenty of other options available, such as possibly starting with Matt or Franny Green, or adjusting the formation to include all or several of Sam Deering, Alfie Potter, Jamie Cook, and Lee Fowler, plus the midfield ballast of Dannie Bulman and Simon Clist, the absence of Constable and Murray shouldn't be too keenly felt.

Oxford haven't lost at Luton for over ten years, although they haven't won a league fixture there since May 1987. The Hatters' form has been patchy, having won only one of their last six home Conference games, although they have also beaten Rotherham United 3-0 in the FA Cup. Last week they were beaten 3-2 by Ebbsfleet United, although on Saturday they went some way to atoning for that with a 1-0 win at Barrow. Tonight's other Conference fixtures see Stevenage Borough host Mansfield Town, while Kettering Town visit Ebbsfleet. So a positive result tonight for United should see them put aside fears that their recent form could herald a slide away from the top. This evening's referee is Robert Madley, who had an appalling game when last in charge of an Oxford United match – the 3-1 win over Crawley Town on 29 September.
