The Barrow march

From the Rage Online newsdesk Friday, October 2nd, 2009

Oxford United face the long trip to Barrow tomorrow (although not quite as far as Gateshead last Saturday) for another difficult game. Last season's opener saw the Us comprehensively beaten at the Conference's new boys 3-0, however, only three players remain at the club from that squad following an overhaul by Chris Wilder, and the current side should be an altogether different proposition for the Holker Street lads. United have lost only once on the road since Boxing Day last year, at Mansfield Town a week and a half ago, and the Us have kept four clean sheets in their last five away games.

Wilder has one new injury doubt, as goalkeeper Ryan Clarke hurt his elbow in the 3-1 win over Crawley Town on Tuesday. However, with Billy Turley waiting for his chance to stake a claim for a place Clarke's absence, if he doesn't play, this shouldn't unduly weaken the Yellows. Marcus Kelly is still out with his toe injury, but Rhys Day has resumed full training and could be on the bench. Damien Batt has served his one-game suspension and could replace Adam Chapman at right back, although Chappers performance against Crawley might earn him a reprieve. Jamie Cook can also return to the squad following his ineligibility on Tuesday, giving Lord Wilder some great options, but difficult decisions to make. Wilder was yesterday voted the Blue Square Premier Manager of the Month, for the second month running, while Clarke won the Player of the Month award.

On Tuesday night Barrow had an excellent result, for Oxford as well as for them, by beating Mansfield 3-1, with Jason Walker running the Stags to ground. The Barrovians are 17th in the table, but their home form has been indifferent. United supporters have been allocated the Holker Street end, normally the preserve of the home supporters, but as this is a roofless terrace and with rain and strong winds forecast, Us fans would be advised to wear a hat. United have never won at Holker Street, but as this appears to be the season for breaking similar records this shouldn't be taken as an indicator of the result.[@opponent]barrow[/@opponent][@connection]barrow[/@connection]
