In one of the strangest moves of the close season so far, almost rivaling that of Onome Sodje from York City to Barnsley, Oxford have signed Matt Green on a one-year loan from Torquay United.
Oxford fans will not need reminding that Green, who scored ten goals in 21 appearances in his last spell at the club, was due to sign for Oxford having agreed a deal with then manager Darren Patterson in June 2008. However, on the day he was due to sign, with Patterson, Mick Brown, and Green's agent all waiting for him at the Kassam Stadium, he phoned from Devon to say that he had signed for Torquay instead.
Green's time at Torquay wasn't spectacularly successful, scoring five goals in 32 appearances and frequently on the bench. However, at Oxford he will be looked at as the third striker to complement James Constable and Jack Midson, and it's possible that the weight of expectation will be less than if he were the main striker, although he is going to have to do well if he is to win over the Oxford fans who were, to put it mildly, disappointed with his decision to sign for the Gulls. There remains a question mark over the state of his knees, which often prevented him from playing two games in a week and from training full time.
Rage Online's stance is a supportive one – we'll cheer any player wearing Oxford's shirt and, with one or two exceptions, Chris Wilder's record with transfers is exceptional. However, we reserve the right to offer up an occasional tut should Green misplace a pass or miss an easy chance.
Meanwhile, United's interest in Kidderminster Harriers striker Matt Barnes-Homer ended today when he signed a new two-year deal with the Harriers.[@player]green, matthew[/@player]
