Report by Nick Wehmeier
Raging Fever spent the bank holiday weekend in Weymouth, combining a night out with a fundraising 6-a-side tournament held on the pitch at Weymouth FC's ground.
The evening began began with a traditional seaside fish and chip supper and continued with a tour of the finest drinking establishments that Weymouth had to offer. Highlights of an enjoyable evening included a spot of karaoke, a bottle of 'champagne', some suspect dancing, a late-night stroll on the beach, and certain team members being locked out of their hotel room in the early hours of the morning.
Fever's late night would catch up with them the following morning, however, as they arrived at the Wessex stadium with many players looking somewhat the worse for wear. Their first game came against the only other traveling fans' team in the competition: Eastleigh. It seems the Fever players were still asleep at kick-off and promptly found themselves two goals down before they'd even started. They rallied somewhat in the second half and managed to keep the final score down to 2-0.
Fever made a moderate improvement for the second game, against Sherbourne Tigers, who had impressed in their first game and looked to be the strongest team in the group. Somewhat surprisingly, then, they managed to grind out a goalless draw, keeping the Tigers in their cages whilst never really looking like scoring themselves.
This meant that, going into the last game, against all the odds, any win would ensure second place in the group and progression to the knock-out stages. There was, therefore, a renewed sense of optimism as they lined up against Sleazy Disco. This was soon snubbed out as they quickly found themselves a goal down and went on to lose the game 2-0.
Fever's dream (nightmare) was over as they finished bottom of the group with no goals scored. Despite the poor performance, though, they did seem to have been very unlucky in having been drawn in what must have been one of the toughest groups in the competition.
A lesson learned, then, on mixing alcohol and football for the upcoming trip to Glasgow. Perhaps…
