Who’s going up with the Oxford?

From the Rage Online newsdesk Saturday, April 18th, 2009

There was a mixed set of results in today's Conference fixtures as far as Oxford United are concerned. With the four teams that Oxford can still overtake playing games involving each other then it was (obviously) impossible for them all to lose. As it was, they all drew, which means that they all remain catchable, but on the other hand they all picked up a point that could prove valuable come next Sunday. Histon, who look to have a nailed on three points when they play Weymouth on Tuesday, took the lead against Kidderminster Harriers but, as is their wont, Kiddy equalised and the game finished 1-1. Both are now on 79 points, two ahead of Oxford, with two games left, and both with a superior goal difference to the Us. Stevenage Borough were held to a 0-0 draw at home by Torquay United, who had Lee Mansell sent off. This means Torquay are also on 79 points with a better goal difference than Oxford, while Stevenage remain just outside the play-offs, one points above United and with a worse goal difference. On Tuesday Torquay make the long journey to Barrow, while the big game is between Stevenage and Kidderminster. Meanwhile, Cambridge United won 2-1 at Salisbury City to keep up the pressure on Burton Albion, who face Torquay in the final game.

At the bottom of the table Northwich Victoria's relegation was confirmed (if it wasn't already) despite their 3-0 win over bottom club Lewes. Weymouth are two points from safety with three games left after they lost 2-0 at home to Ebbsfleet, while Woking are a point from safety with just one game remaining after they were held to a 2-2 draw at home by Mansfield Town, for whom Rob Duffy scored both goals. York City gave their chances of survival a huge boost by beating Eastbourne Borough 1-0 to go a point clear of the drop zone with three games remaining. Grays Athletic are still in danger after losing 2-0 at Altrincham, to leave themselves two points clear with two games left, while Barrow are virtually safe after they drew 3-3 with Crawley Town to go three points above Woking with two games left. Jamie Cook scored twice for Crawley, one from the penalty spot.

Teams that look like joining the Conference next season are, from the Conference South, AFC Wimbledon, who drew 1-1 at second-placed Hampton & Richmond to mean that the only way Hampton can catch the Dons is by a couple of freak results next weekend. In the Conference North, Tamworth's 2-0 win over Vauxhall Motors leaves them two points above Gateshead with two games to play, while Gateshead have but one match remaining. In the Fourth Division, Chester City's 2-0 home defeat by AFC Bournemouth leaves them four points adrift of Bournemouth and Grimsby Town, who beat Port Vale 3-0, with two games left. Already relegated Luton Town drew 1-1 at Barnet.
