Tonight's Conference results made United's faint dreams of a play-off place that much harder to turn to reality. Oxford have slipped to eighth place and are now four points adrift of the play-offs, and they've still played more games than their rivals.
The most significant result from Oxford's point of view was Stevenage Borough's 2-0 win at York City. This takes Borough up to that coveted fifth place, four points above the Us and with a game in hand. Kettering Town also went above Oxford, by one point, after they drew 1-1 at top-of-the-table Burton Albion. Crawley Town would have gone above United had they won at Eastbourne Borough, but they lost 2-1 and are now effectively out of the play-off race. Histon, who visit Oxford on Saturday, beat Mansfield Town 3-0 to back up to third.
Ebbsfleet United were the big movers at the bottom of the table, their 1-0 win over Altrincham lifting them up two places to 19th. Grays Athletic dropped to fourth from bottom, one place below York, after they drew 0-0 with Rushden & Diamonds. Second-bottom Northwich Victoria drew 1-1 with Salisbury City. Uniquely (almost) there were no ex-Oxford players on the scoresheet in the Conference this evening.
