Dropping like a (tomb)stone

From the Rage Online newsdesk Tuesday, September 18th, 2007

Tonight's Conference fixtures produced some very high scoring games, including a couple of spectacular comebacks. The top four sides all won, meaning that Oxford United are now nine points behind leaders Stevenage Borough, who beat Farsley Celtic 4-0. Aldershot stay second after beating hapless York City 2-0, York remaining one place above the relegation zone.

Third-placed Torquay United were involved in a bizarre game at the Glassworld Stadium, where United travel to play Histon on Thursday. Torquay stormed into a 3-0 half-time lead, including goals from Tim Sills and Chris Zebroski. Histon pulled two goals back, before Zebroski added a fourth for the Gulls from the penalty spot. However, two penalties to the home team, converted by Cliff Akurang to secure his hat-trick, looked to have earned last season's Conference South champions a share of the points, until Christopher Todd popped up with a last-minute winner for the visitors. Cambridge United stayed fourth with a 3-0 win at fourth-bottom Altrincham, still without a home point. Courtney Pitt scoring Cambridge's first goal.

Burton Albion stay fifth, despite being held to a 1-1 draw at home by Ebbsfleet United. Salisbury City, who visit Grenoble Road next Tuesday, have climbed to sixth after beating second-bottom Stafford Rangers 1-0 in Old Sarum. Depending on which table you believe, Crawley Town are either seventh or 17th, according to the status of their alleged six-point deduction. Whatever, they beat Woking 5-3. Exeter City looked to be cruising at home to Forest Green Rovers, leading 2-0 at half time. Rovers pulled the scoreline back to 2-2, but the Grecians took the lead again with 15 minutes remaining. Having scored an equaliser at the end of added time at the United Stadium, we can imagine how gutted the City fans must feel at seeing their side concede a 94th-minute equaliser. Hah!

Like Salisbury and Crawley, Kidderminster Harriers leapt above Oxford after they beat third-bottom Droyslden 3-1 at Aggborough. Northwich Victoria remain bottom after losing 3-1 at resurgent Halifax Town. Jefferson Louis scored an equaliser for Weymouth at home to Rushden & Diamonds, but Rushden went on to win the game 2-1.

With every side in the Conference now having played ten games, United are in ninth position (tenth, if Crawley's points deduction is successfully appealed against), nine points behind leaders Stevenage (yes, we know we've already said that), just five points above 19th-placed Farsley, but a whopping 11 points ahead of York, in 20th place. Today's results make United's next four fixtures, all eminently winnable, almost must-win games, prior to the visit of Torquay United. The pressure's on, the timer's ticking. Let's go.
