Well worth it cup!

United progressed to the second round of the Worthington Cup thanks to an 18th minute goal from James Hunt at Ashton Gate this evening, the first goal that Bristol City have conceded at home this season. A determined defensive performance, especially in the second half, paid dividends and goes some way to making up for the recent disappointments in the league. Oxford played in their new third kit of navy blue shirts for the first time, in case Yellow clashed with City's red, presumably.

United made just one personnel change from Saturday's starting line-up, with Matt Bound coming in to a back three formation to displace Dean Whitehead to the bench. This is the first time this season that the Us have played this formation and it was obviously the right decision from Ian Atkins, on this occasion at least. Matt Robinson went off after just half an hour, feeling a twinge in his hamstring, to be replaced by Paul Powell.

Referee Trevor Parkes blotted his copybook by sending off Andy Scott in the 86th minute for a harmless-looking tussle with Matthew Hill, showing Scott his second yellow after the striker had been booked just 15 minutes earlier. Dave Savage and Scott McNiven were both also booked in a frenetic second half that saw United under the cosh. Atkins was also banished from the touchline for his protestations at Scott's dismissal. The attendance was just 4,065. A match report, courtesy of Kevin Billington, can be found right here.

Elsewhere Andy Thomson was on target again for QPR with a penalty, but Rangers lost 3-2 at Orient. Norman Sylla scored a hat-trick for Banbury United, following the goal he scored on Saturday.
