United went down at home again tonight to a well-organised but pretty ordinary Macclesfield Town side, who won 2-0 with a goal in first half injury time. Goals from Lee Glover followed by a 48th minute header by former United triallist Kyle Lightbourne, his first for the Silkmen, received no response from a very poor United.
Mark Wright made three changes from the abysmal side at Exeter, bringing in Paul Powell for Sam Ricketts, Manny Omoyinmi for Dean Whitehead, and Andy Scott, returned from suspension, in place of Jamie Brookes who didn't even make it onto the bench. Phil Bolland recovered from his rib injury to retain his place at the back. Shortly into the second half Wright rang the changes once more with a double substitution which saw Ricketts on for Powell and ROS Rob Folland replace Phil Gray. Not long after Whitehead came on for Martin Thomas.
Referee G Hegley booked Whitehead for dissent and Folland for a particularly innocuous handball. The attendance of 4,964, boosted by about 90 Macclesfield fans, was the lowest yet at the new stadium and so sets a record of sorts. A match report can be found here.
United have dropped to 17th in the table, just three points above Exeter who have slipped to the bottom again following their 3-2 home defeat against Plymouth. Macclesfield have risen to 12th. United's opponents at the Kassam on Saturday, Southend, are 10th after they lost 2-1 at Bristol Rovers.
