United went down to their seventh successive game without a win 2-0 at home to Wigan tonight. Wigan's first goal came after eleven minutes from Scott Green and the second was added two minutes from time by Andy Liddell. Sam Ricketts replaced Neil McGowan at left wingback, whilst Peter Fear was the replacement for the suspended Dean Whitehead. Lee Jarman came on for the injured Jon Shepheard in the second half and a double substitution twenty minutes into the half saw Chris Hackett replace Jamie Cook and Joey Beauchamp replace Simon Weatherstone. Fear was United's only booking by referee Andy Hall in front of a crowd of 4,030. A match report appears here.
Luton's game at Oldham was postponed, and swindon also lost 2-0 at home to Millwall. Bournemouth went down 1-0 at home to Notts County whilst Port Vale drew 1-1 with Brentford in Burslem.
Speaking before this evening's game Joe Kinnear told Radio Oxford that Firoz Kassam had actually asked him to take the manager's job at United, but it was Kinnear who hadn't yet decided what he wanted to do in the long term, although he didn't specifically rule out the possibility. Kinnear said that he would meet with Kassam, whom he has known for some time, after the Oxford chairman returns from his business trip on Thursday or Friday. Kinnear stated that he would work with Denis Smith in identifying players to bring to the club, and reiterated Kassam's earnest desire to keep the club from relegation. however unlikely this seems at present.
