It was a year ago today that FOUL (Fighting for Oxford United's Life) was formed at a meeting in the Oxford United Supporters Club, following discussions on the club's official Forum about the plight of the U's. At the time it seemed just a matter of time before the club's debts, coupled with the limitations of the Manor, dragged it under but a concerted effort from supporters, club officials, the local councils, the media and many others ensured that professional football still survives in the city.
When FOUL was formed Keith Cox was the club chairman, Robin Herd the (absentee) owner, the board consisted of Nick Harris, Geoff Coppock and Maurice Evans, and Ian Davies was the club's General Manager. All have now gone, but FOUL still survives to try and counter potential threats to the club's continued existence, such as the appeal by Nick Pentith and British Rail Properties Board to allow their Judicial Review; any potential problems that might arise as a result of the proposed caution by Les Wells; contractual problems with Taylor Woodrow; possible delays concerning Thames Water, and any as yet unforeseen obstacles which might still exist between now and the first game at Minchery Farm.
Oxford City, whose FA Cup 1st round replay at Wycombe was abandoned due to a fire alarm just prior to the penalty shoot-out, are to replay the match at the Manor on Tuesday 16th November (7.45pm). Mick Brown, United's secretary, was at Adams Park to watch the game and afterwards immediately informed City chairman Mick Woodley that United were willing to assist their local rivals in any way possible. This gesture was made practical when, after the drawing of lots, it was determined that City had the choice of venue and they plumped for United's ground. On the night City's support is sure to be swelled by United fans, although it's possible that Wycombe will number other U's fans amongst their number! Read this short report for further details.
The man with the tan, Nicky Banger, has finally departed from the Manor after having been released at the beginning of June. He has signed a two-and-a-half year contract with Scottish Premier League side Dundee, who are obviously either desparate or oblivious to Banger's limitations. This transfer demonstrates the low standard of Scottish football.
According to the rumour instigator TeamTalk Ray Houghton is apparently the favourite for the boss's job at the Manor. The site also claims that Joe Kinnear is wanted by the board (could they afford him?). Apparently the players have come out in favour of Mickey Lewis (well, they would, wouldn't they?) which is probably as good a reason as any to give the job to someone else!
