United go through

A 22nd minute goal from David Oldfield, his first for the club, was enough to see Oxford United into tomorrow's draw for the FA Cup second round. Oldfield struck with a spectacular 15 yard overhead kick for the only goal of the game, although Steve Basham should earlier have put United ahead with a couple of decent chances, one of which hit the post. Despite having chances to kill the game off, United let Dover off the hook leading to a nervous second half. This was United's first away win against non-league opposition since the last time they visited Dover, 21 years ago and was greeted with a sigh of relief rather than jubilation. The draw for the second round takes place tomorrow at 3.15, with United being ball number 3.

United made just one change from the line-up which began against Rochdale last Saturday, Dave Waterman coming into central defence to replace the departed Adi Viveash. In the second half Jefferson Louis replaced Oldfield and with about five minutes remaining Manny Omoyinmi came on for Dave Savage.

Referee Mike Thorpe kept good control of the game and didn't show any cards to United players, which was nice of him. The attendance of 4,186 was a record for the Crabble, despite two Dover fans having to leave before the kick-off because they were on lifeboat duty.

There weren't many cup shocks around, although Morecambe won 2-1 at Chesterfield and Mark Wright's Chester beat Colchester 1-0 at Layer Road. Southport beat Notts County 4-2 and in the round's biggest upset Huddersfield lost 1-0 at swindon. Nigel Jemson opened the scoring for Shrewsbury, who went on to beat Stafford Rangers 4-0, and Marco Gabbiadini scored Northampton's second in their 3-2 win over Boston. United's opponents next week, Kidderminster Harriers, were held to a 2-2 draw by Rushden & Diamonds.
