Happy Maxwell Day!

On the tenth anniversary of the Fat Man's death the nation celebrates with fireworks and bonfires and the ritual burning of the Bob. Oxford United marked the anniversary in its own inimitable way, by announcing that a former swindon player, Michael Meaker, is currently on trial with the club. The thirty year old midfielder, formerly with QPR and Reading too, is currently knocking around in the Conference, at Steve Davis's Northwich Victoria and is possibly the “midfield general” that Mark Wright claims he requires.

Meanwhile it's possible that the likelihood of United signing him has been reduced with the return of Phil Gray from his loan spell at Boston. Gray was sent off in his first game for the Teamakers and also failed to feature in their FA Cup defeat at Brigg as United didn't want him cup-tied, which makes for pleasing medium-term thinking from a club not renowned for such forward planning.
