United gained their first away points, and only their second win, of the season at Swansea yesterday. The Swans took the lead in the 12th minute through Steve Watkins, but five minutes later Joey Beauchamp equalised with a spectacular 30 yard shot. Oxford scored the winner in the 34th minute when Keith Andrews converted a Beauchamp corner. All three new signings started the game, Keith Brown in place of Paul Powell at left back, Andrews came in for Simon Weatherstone in midfield and Phil Gray started instead of Steve Anthrobus up front. There were no substitutions. The crowd was 4,892 and Peter Fear was booked. Read this match report.
United are still four points behind Luton, who lost 3-0 at Kenilworth Road to Bristol City. The team from down the A420 are a further five points ahead despite (or maybe because of) losing 4-0 at Peterborough. Swansea have now been dragged into the relegation zone after losing to Oxford, and Port Vale are also on 17 points, their game at Notts County being postponed due to the weather. Oldham and Bournemouth are both on 19 points after winning 1-0 at Stoke and 3-0 at Northampton respectively.
Paul Moody scored the only goal as Millwall beat Wrexham, whilst a Paul Wanless own goal ensure that Wigan beat Cambridge at the JJB Stadium. John Durnin put Kidderminster ahead at Hartlepool, but ended up losing 3-1. Dave Penney scored Doncaster's third goal as they beat Rushden & Diamonds 3-2, whilst Mark McGregor scored Nuneaton's first two goals as they thrashed Hednesford 5-1.
