Phil Gray's first goal for United was enough to give United victory in their first ever visit to Macclesfield's Moss Rose 'stadium' in the FA Cup first round. Oxford's victory earned them another long trip in the second round, visiting the winner of the Plymouth v Chester replay which takes place at Home Park on Tuesday 28th November, following a 1-1 draw at the Deva. The only change from the side which won at Swansea was the enforced one due to Wolves' refusal to allow Keith Andrews to play, him being replaced by Lee Jarman. Gray's goal came after 58 minutes but Macclesfield almost salvaged a draw after Andy Linighan gave away an 89th minute penalty. This led to disgraceful scenes from some of the Oxford fans who pulled the net away from the crossbar leading to a lengthy delay. When the penalty was eventually taken, by Lee Glover, it was a poor one easily saved by Richard Knight. United made no substitutions, Jon Richardson was cautioned in the first half, and the attendance was just 2,141. A match report can be found here.

Defensive rumours

Apparently United are one of a number of league clubs interested in 25 year old Forest Green Rovers defender Wayne Hatswell. swindon born Hatswell, who has already had a trial for Northampton, playing for their reserves against Portsmouth last Wednesday, joined FGR from Cinderford Town last year.

Another defender who has been linked with United is Ipswich Town's John Scales. 34 year old Scales played for Joe Kinnear at Wimbledon and is now struggling to get into the Ipswich first team. Kinnear attended a recent reserve game between Spurs and Ipswich, sparking the rumour.

Canadian Steve Vickers, whose United career lasted 17 minutes of a reserve game, has spent some time with Oxford City on no-contract terms prior to a move to Chester City next week where he is hoping to land a longer-term contract.
