Generally speaking, a good date for United. As far back as 1956 the U’s beat next season’s opponents Kidderminster Harriers 5-2 in a Southern League match at the Manor, including a hat-trick from Jimmy Smillie. Another of next season’s opposition, Cheltenham Town, fell at home to United 2-1 in Oxford’s final season (so far) as a non-League club, in 1962. Two years later Hartlepools United lost 5-1 at the Manor and then in 1981 United won 3-0 at Walsall. In 1987 Division One United lost 3-1 at home to Liverpool, Oxford’s goal being scored by the late Tommy Caton. In 1998 goals from Joey Beauchamp, Kevin Francis (2) and Matt Murphy (2) ensured a 5-1 victory over Stoke City. It seems such a long time ago…
