Wanless than Cambridge

United went down to a last minute goal from former U's midfielder Paul Wanless after themselves coming close to snatching victory. Kemp stuck with the same side which beat Rotherham on Saturday, even down to the substitution of Paul Powell for Joey Beauchamp. Robert Quinn was booked. There were 3,502 in attendance. A match report is now here.

Elsewhere in the division Phil Whitehead's heroics ensured that Reading came away with all three points at swindon, Port Vale won 1-0 at Notts County, and Peterborough and Luton shared the points with a 1-1 draw. This all leaves United 25 points from safety with a further 30 left to play for, so the U's could be relegated at Bournemouth a week today should the results go that way.

S&R say Yes!

The City Council's Strategy and Resources Committee this morning voted to agree to the agreement between the Council, Les Wells and Firoz Kassam which should see an end to the legal obstacles preventing completion of the project. The vote was carried with twelve in favour and none against, although there were a few absentions. This now leaves the full Council to vote on the deal; they meet at 6.30pm on Thursday. There is still some confusion after Lib-Dem leader, and chair of the S&R Committee Corinna Redman, claimed that there was still a need to negotiate whether Les Wells' claim for a Judicial Review is to be dropped altogether or just postponed, but hopefully that is just Ms Redman being confused.

Kassam stated that the stadium contractors, Birse, are due to be paid tomorrow, but that he is not going to fork out any more until this matter is sorted. Presumably Birse are aware of the issues and hopefully will wait until after Thursday's vote before pulling any workers off site as any delay could be potentially fatal.

Cambridge preview

United visit the Abbey Stadium this evening following Saturday's bizarre victory over Rotherham and are likely to field the same side. Striker Phil Gray is still on international duty for Northern Ireland (he came on for the final 15 minutes of their game over the Czech Republic and hit the bar) and Rob Folland is still with Wales under-21s (he didn't feature in their match against Armenia on Friday) whilst Dean Whitehead is still suspended. That just leaves Matt Murphy and it will be a big test of David Kemp's nerve whether or not he leaves out last season's leading scorer, who has been a liability this time round. More rain is expected today so there is still a danger that the match might be called off, but should it go ahead Rage Online, with uncharacteristic optimism, predicts a 1-1 draw.
