Oxford again won on their travels, to make their away record better than at the Manor, when Phil Whelan somehow scrambled the ball home in injury time at Colchester. United had taken the lead in the first half with a long range shot from Simon Weatherstone for his first of the season, but the home side equalised through Aaron Skelton who was left unmarked at a corner midway through the second half.
Weatherstone started the game in place of the injured Joey Beauchamp, and Derek Lilley came in for Craig Russell. Lilley was substituted for Jamie Cook, and Russell came on for the last game of his loan spell in place of Weatherstone. Shortly before United scored the winner Steve Anthrobus replaced Nigel Jemson. This result lifts United one place, but they remain in the relegation zone following Cambridge United's 3-0 win at Scunthorpe, whilst at another relegation clash Blackpool threw away a two goal lead to allow Cardiff a 2-2 draw. Bottom club Chesterfield drew 1-1 at home to Wigan, whilst Wrexham were drawn back into danger (although still six points ahead of Oxford) by losing 1-0 at home to Burnley.
Former United front man Martin Foyle announced today that he was stepping down from playing first team football in order to concentrate on his duties as coach at Port Vale. Foyle, 36, cost United £140,000 when signed from Aldershot in March 1987. He made 150 appearances for United in league and cup, scoring just seven goals, before being sold to Vale for £375,000 in June 1991. His retirement comes with Foyle having scored 199 first class goals in total. Despite his dearth of goals Foyle was a very popular figure at United, holding up the ball well and forming a healthy partnership with Dean Saunders.
Darlington's goal in their 2-1 defeat at Orient was scored, as is customary these days, by Marco Gabbiadini. For the third successive game David Penney scored for Doncaster, equalising Yeovil's opener in Donny's 3-1 victory.
