Eddie's ready

Transfer deadline day and not a single United player left the fold, despite numerous rumours concerning Paul Powell, Joey Beauchamp, Mark Watson and even Les Robinson. Instead our squad size increased by one as Oxford signed Eddie Newton, the former Chelsea midfielder, from Birmingham on a free transfer until the end of the season. Not quite the Premiership player that Denis Smith promised, but someone with a lot of Premiership experience who was unable to break into the Birmingham first team this season. Newton has a bruised shin and so won't be making his debut at Cambridge (who signed goalkeeper Lionel Perez on loan from Newcastle United) this Saturday.

Former United loanee Craig Russell had a proposed move to St. Johnstone break down and so he remains at Maine Road.
