United lose crucial game

Oxford came away from their crucial relegation clash at Cambridge pointless as first half goals from Trevor Benjamin and John Hansen allowed the other U's to leapfrog the real U's. Both goals followed defensive errors by United, the first when Matt Murphy headed the ball straight to Benjamin after just eight minutes, and the second when Phil Whelan passed back to Richard Knight, straight into Hansen's path just a minute before halftime.

Oxford began with the same line-up which started at Bury last Tuesday, but midway through the second half Denis Smith made a double substitution, bringing on Steve Davis for Mark Watson and Nigel Jemson for Simon Weatherstone. Both Watson and Whelan were booked for what seemed fair tackles by referee Michael Jones, and Les Robinson was also yellow carded for bringing down Hansen after being, yet again, beaten for pace. Further details are available in this match report.

This, and today's other results, has pushed United back into the relegation zone following Cardiff's 1-0 victory at Reading. Scunthorpe lost 2-1 at home to Oldham, Blackpool were hammered 3-0 at Stoke, and Chesterfield lost 3-1 at home to Luton.

He was crap at the Manor

There was a shock in Division Three where Darlington won 1-0 at Hull, because the scorer wasn't Marco Gabbiadini. Instead it was Lee Nogan.
