United snatch a draw against Chelsea…
…unless of course you include the first 45 minutes, during which Oxford gifted the opposition four goals. Chelsea got off to a slow start, not scoring until the third minute when the Oxford defence kindly declined to mark Gustavo Poyet at a corner. Gianfranco Zola, one of the original Chelsea pensioners, outpaced Neil McGowan for the second. Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink scored a similar goal shortly afterwards and then latched onto a poor Richard Knight parry for a fourth on the half hour. In the second half Chelsea added a fifth through Gabriele Ambrosetti before United pulled a goal back following a quickly taken free kick which Anders Jacobsen met with a firm header. This was saved by Kevin Hitchcock but the 'keeper could do nothing to prevent Jacobsen's follow up. The game was watched by 4,521 and a match report can be found here.
The boy is back in town
Mark Watson has rejoined United for training today after an extended holiday in Canada (not quite as nice as Barbados, but better than Gosport). He still hasn't yet signed a new contract with the club, but he is meeting with Denis Smith on Monday to continue and conclude negotiations, which is a slight climbdown from Smith, who said that the club's stance was rigid. We await Monday's developments with interest, as well as seeing where this leaves the two other centre-backs who are currently trying to impress Smith: Lee Jarman and Anders Jacobsen.
