Oxford can't prevent Cureton

Oxford fell to their heaviest home defeat since getting thrashed 7-1 by Birmingham in December 1998, this time falling 5-0 to an impressive Bristol Rovers outfit who had previously only ever won twice at the Manor. Rovers' goals came from a Jamie Cureton hat-trick plus one each from Robbie Pethick and Nathan Ellington. United started with Neil McGowan in place of Robbie Folland at right back and loanee goalkeeper Richard Knight debutising in place of the suspended Pål Lundin. Paul Powell was replaced in the first half by Peter Fear who went to right back with McGowan switching to left back. In the second half Ben Abbey came on for Steve Anthrobus shortly after Rovers' second goal and Derek Lilley replaced Joey Beauchamp with the score at 5-0. This result leaves Oxford fifth from bottom, still just three points above the relegation zone. There were no bookings, but there is a match report.

The next quarter century

After United's defeat by the Gas the TVFM phone-in was inundated with calls blaming chairman Firoz Kassam for the club's dire situation, including Terry Gardener of SOUS. As a result Kassam himself was interviewed during which, in a clearly emotional state, he blamed the City Council for the hold up in signing the land deal and blamed Ray Harford for the misunderstanding over his position. Kassam also stated that his interest in Oxford United was not short-term profiteering and he pledged that he would be in charge of the club “for the next twenty five years”.

Wiiiiiillll!!!

Former United favourite Brian Wilsterman scored Rotherham's fourth goal as they beat Exeter 5-0 at Millmoor.
