Canada upsets Mexico, and Oxford

Canada produced one of the shocks of the year in the CONCACAF Gold Cup quarter final in San Diego by beating favourites Mexico 2-1, with Richard Hastings scoring a golden goal in extra time after the game ended 1-1 after 90 minutes. Ramon Ramirez had given Mexico the lead in the first half but Carlo Corrazin, once a transfer target of Denis Smith's, equalised with ten minutes to go to set up extra time. Canada will now face Trinidad & Tobago in the semi-final on Thursday which means, even if Canada loses, that Mark Watson might not be able to play for United against Wrexham on Saturday due to tiredness and jetlag. This leaves United with precisely no recognised central defenders for this fixture as Phil Whelan and Steve Davis are both suspended. A report on the Canada v. Mexico game can be found here, and another one is here.
