Not so glorious

United lost their first game of the season at home to Peterborough, a 30th minute goal from Dave Farrell enough to dispel any pre-season optimism that might have been lingering in dark corners of the Manor. All of Oxford's new signings (except Jimmy Glass) were in the starting line-up, although Lee Jarman was replaced at half-time by Joey Beauchamp, at the same time as Steve Anthrobus came on for Simon Weatherstone. Peter Fear began his first game as club captain, but he didn't finish it as he was substituted midway through the second half by Derek Lilley. Anthrobus was booked by our old friend Barry Knight. The game was watched by 5,870 and a match report can be read here.

Paul Simpson scored on his Blackpool debut to give them a 3-1 win over Hull, whilst Lee Nogan hit the net for Darlington in their 1-1 draw at Rochdale. In the First Division Guy Butters scored for Gillingham as they went down 3-1 at home to Stockport.
