Pre-season optimism: here we go again!

Greenock Morton 0 Oxford United 3

United eased to victory over Scottish Division One side Morton this afternoon. The Us had the better of the first half, but didn't make the breakthrough until shortly after the break, Jack Midson taking advantage of some good work by Alfie Potter to score his second goal in consecutive games, just 38 seconds into the second half. After 66 minutes Oxford doubled the lead when Sam Deering, on for Matt Green, had three shots on goal, the third finally going in. In the final minute James Constable, who had replaced Midson, converted a Deering cross to complete the scoring.

Of particular note to Oxford supporters was the back line, which started with Ryan Clarke in goal, Luke Foster at right back, Kevin Sandwith on the left with the captain's armband, and Mark Creighton in the centre alongside former Aldershot captain Rhys Day. Day, 26, is on trial with United but is looking very likely to join the side, having made his own way to Scotland to meet up with the side. Day was recently on trial with Cambridge United, playing in their 2-2 draw with Cambridge City, and Gary Brabin desperately wanted to sign the former Mansfield defender who was released by the Shots at the end of last season. It was the Cambridge board's refusal to subsidise Day's signing that led to Brabin's departure from Cambridge recently.

The last time United played Morton was 31 July 1968, when John Shuker and Mick Bullock scored in a 3-2 defeat at the Manor. The attendance for that game was 3,826. This afternoon' match attracted less than ten per cent of that figure, with 369 present. Almost a third of that figure comprised Oxford fans.

United's next pre-season test is on Tuesday, when they face a Glasgow Rangers side at Rangers' training centre, in a game not open to the public. Then Queens Park Rangers visit the KasStad on Friday, by which time Chris Wilder will probably be a lot clearer about his first eleven for the first league game, three weeks from today.
