Wigan win, Oxford lose

Two goals from Simon Haworth, the first in the 22nd minute, the second in the 90th, ensured that United's first trip to the JJB Stadium ended pointless. Haworth also scored both of Wigan's goals in their 2-1 win at the Manor in January. Steve Davis replaced Phil Whelan in the centre of defence and Nigel Jemson started in place of the injured Steve Anthrobus. Midway through the second half a double substitution saw Jemson and Jamie Cook replaced by Simon Weatherstone and Chris Hackett, making his league debut. Steve Davis was booked for an elbowing offence. The attendance was a numerologically interesting 4,848. There's a match report of sorts here.

Although United's two closest rivals, Cambridge and Cardiff, both drew Oxford's league position remains unchanged, fifth from bottom. Cambridge were held 1-1 by Bristol Rovers at the Abbey Stadium despite taking an early lead when Trevor Benjamin set a new club record by scoring in his eighth successive game, and Cardiff managed a 0-0 draw at league leaders Preston, leaving them two points behind Oxford but with a game in hand. Blackpool also drew 1-1 at Colchester, whilst Scunthorpe lost 2-1 at home to Luton and Chesterfield went down 2-1 at home to Wycombe.

Paul Moody scored Millwall's first goal in their 3-0 win over Bury. Anyone remember Jimmy Phillips? Well he scored Bolton's third in their 4-3 win over Walsall.

Two new U's

Youth team players Dean Whitehead and Sam Ricketts have both been offered professional contracts by United. Both are currently second-year trainees. Meanwhile United's youth team drew 2-2 away at Cirencester.
