I have to agree with SmileyMan, for all his success first time round, and for all the failings of the Talbot era, Smith was in the end responsible for taking us down. When he took over we were 16th yet apart from Rushden we gained far fewer points than anyone else in the bottom half of the table from that point on. Other teams stuck together and ground out points, Smith brought in at least half a dozen players who added nothing yet completely disrupted any team togetherness.
People have their views on Patterson based on his whole period in charge, but I still maintain to this day that had he been left in charge when WPL took over, our Conference adventure would never have happened...or at least not that season.
