The Constable/Batt substitution was a straight swap (of sorts) but I couldn't see the change of formation when Tonkin came on. My thoughts at the time were that he would play at left back with Davis pushing forwards where Morgan was playing, but perhaps that didn't happen. In the past I recall Tonkin playing as a third centre half?
Anyway, I'm not convinced that bringing on a defender for an attacker late in games is always wise....it seems to encourage us to sit back.
Incidentally, player of the season.....one of Duberry, Whing or Clarke for me. Can't quite make up my mind which though........!

You're wrong sir. Whing was on the pitch at the end. Dean Morgan was in the showers. Or having a lie-down. Poor chap, he was exhausted. Not surprising when you see the size of the baseball cap he's wearing in the post match YP interview. That's a lot of weight to carry."bingobongo" wrote:We went to 4-4-2 then, Tonkin initially going in at left mid before swapping with Davis:

GY, I know you've always been a big fan of Batt but you must accept that he is one of our weaker links this season. According to the official site Dubes has 6 x Yellows Batt has 9 x Yellows and 1 x Red. I accept that Batt is excellent going forward and is much faster than Whing but at the moment I would rather have Whing at right back, even though it's not his best position. One of the reasons for Batt's poor disciplinary record is that he gets caught out of position and is trying to recover a situation."GodalmingYellow" wrote:"Aylesbury Rich" wrote:"GodalmingYellow" wrote:

I would much prefer Batt to Whing at right wing back - but we don't play with wing backs, we play with full backs.

Batt was on Twitter acknowledging the error of his ways.
We do play with wing backs in a 4-3-3 which is Wilder's preferred formation most of the time. Just because it is a back four, doesn't mean we don't play wing backs. The whole point of 4-3-3 is to use wing backs to bolster the midfield going forward whilst retaining defensive cover when on the back foot, in the same way they are used in 5-3-2/3-5-2.
I don't agree with you about Whing over Batt for a full back position either. When Batt makes a mistake he can use his pace to cover it. When Whing makes a mistake, he can't and he has to be covered by either Duberry or whoever is playing in front of the back line.
No doubt I do it as well, but it is very easy to get a set idea in your mind about a player and then try to fit every situation to prove your theory. When I say your, I mean it to include anyone. Very often if you then concentrate on a particular player it turns out that they don't do what you thought after all.

I certainly wasn't suggesting that we drop Duberry, who for my money has a shout for player of the season. I was just pointing out that if you apply a rule for one player, you have to apply it for all players and then the outcome isn't what you wanted to achieve. I agree with you on Batt's attributes. I think he has realised the error of his ways and I would much prefer him to Whing at right wing back. Whing has improved considerably throughout the season and is good cover for Batt, but his best position is in front of the back four.

Re:
Everybody has a slightly different view of these things, mine is that a back four with Duberry and Whing on the right side is stronger defensively than with Duberry and Batt simply because Batt gets forward more and Duberry has to cover more. I'm not talking about mistakes I am talking about the way we play with those two set ups. I agree that Batt v Whing at right back gives us more attacking options which is why CW does it but if you are looking to stabilise and shut out a game then Whing and Duberry is the better combination."GodalmingYellow" wrote:I don't agree with you about Whing over Batt for a full back position either. It is vaguely interesting to me how our formation is changing at this end of the season, together with the subs.
Started with back four of Davis, Duberry, Wright, Whing
Chapman in front of the back 4, Leven and Hall midfield
front three of Morgan, Rendell, Johnson
I would have expected to see Chapman a bit further forward, Murray-esque, behind the front three. but I guess Leven takes that spot now.
Subs of Chapman and Rendell off for Batt and Constable
Batt replaces Whing in defence, and Whing now moves forward into attacking midfield. Constable straight swap for Rendell.
Then Tonkin on for Morgan.
