Anybody......

Post by DLT »

confident that we could make the play offs this season?

So much more fun when the opposition come trying to win.

A great day out, the drums might get on your nerves but the vocal support from Aldershot fans was superb today. And I was very impressed by the flag. Surely the biggest ever at the Kasstad.

Defence was excellent again, Quinn is becoming the Pettefer of defence. A quiet hero.

Duffy and Yemi are our best two goal scorers, but not our best attack pairing. As soon as Bash came on we started to open them up.

At half time I commented that in the first six or so games of the season our superior fitness was obvious, but in recent home games it hasn't been so obvious. Well, did it show today? Not sure it was superior fitness or the penalty deflating Aldershot.

Now how do I tell my lad that Kempton might be off the agenda on Boxing day.

All credit to Aldershot – they came to attack, not kick and time waste and for the majority of the game just about matched us. But their finishing was very much Conference standard. Thankfully.
There was something missing until Basham came on &amp then things started to happen. He began making intelligent runs and passing the ball around on the floor. We then kept possession in and around their box and Burgess had someone to play simple football with in an area where it hurt them. Up until them he had been way below his usual standard and didn’t appear to have the heart for the battle. I was worried in the first half when I saw both him and Eddie jump out of tackles just in front of the South stand. Just like Beckham for England – can’t remember who it was against. Anyway all credit to Burgess – to put the penalty away then have the confidence to run through and score when he had been off his game.

The biggest disappointment today was Duffy. He is not going to do it every week but he didn’t seem to be putting himself about at all and only won the ball in the air about once. Basham had matched that in a matter of minutes.

Yemi’s pace caused them problems and of course he won the penalty. Pity his touch lets him down at times because he would have had a clear cut change when put through by Bash.

Our defenders played really well again but for me MotM was Chris Hargreaves. Battled well, drove the troops on, hit the bar and made some half decent passes. (Surprised?)

I entirely agree with this assessment, about Basham in particular. He did make a difference, partly because Duffy had been so poor in the air this afternoon. I would imagine Jim Smith really knows that Basham should start, but it's not so easy to judge whom with......

For me it was easily the most enjoyable game of the season, and a good advert for the many casual OUFC fans who were there today.

It was a proper sized crowd with proper (their huge flag was just amazing) vocal away support for the first time since Orient. On top of the three points we had floodlights, two late goals, an away team that came to play football, lots of ebbing and flowing, loads of half chances for both sides and the result very much in doubt until that penalty. Even the ref had a half decent game!

Difficult to pick who was MotM today, apart from the fact it wasn’t Duffy, though apparently he played with a broken finger.

I’m happy to be called Mr. Stupid as I did not get my car to the outskirts of the ground until 13:45 and so I had to park in the overflow car park, meaning that it took me 50 minutes after the game to exit the Ozone Complex.

Anyway, my point is that if we’re going to be getting crowds of over 7000 in future then surely there must be a better way of getting vehicles out onto Grenoble Road quicker than using just one entrance for the overflow and West end car parks combined, especially when there are cars coming in for the cinema and bingo and stuff?

Loads of people were moaning about it, and surely it would help to keep the casual fans onboard if we could just find a way of ending their matchday experience with a more reasonable exit home.

Just to finish up, did I recognise Mr. Potter’s (mcf86) voice on RadOx after the match complaining about the “supporters of the previous regime

Unfortunately I don't think that will work. His sporting hero is Kauto Star not Jim Smith.

Stop it, it's bad enough me missing the Woking game by trolling off to Oz for the Ashes without you making it worse.

A horse!!? Anyway you can see some nice horses trotting up and down at the Kasstad. The slightly Spanish person sitting next to me on Saturday was very taken with one in particular on Saturday.

So that is two sensible sports fans on here then, OUFC, horse racing, cricket, in now particular order.

Have to say Boxing day at an Ashes test would certainly beat Kempton or Kasstad for me.

Mind you I am losing the plot, watching Fours Head on the Thames or OUFC at Gravesend? I am choosing the first option.

I may be wrong, and I'm sure that any Council employees knocking about this site can check, but I'm fairly certain that there was an s.106 for the stadium whereby Firoka were to part-fund a roundabout at that junction (although I'm not sure quite how that would improve traffic flow there). If it wasn't a s.106 then it may have been a seperate planning consent, but I'm sure reading that it was due to be built last summer.
